India’s Big Jump in Oil Purchases: Imports from U.S. Set to Rise by 150%
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): After Donald Trump became the President of America for the second time, a new heat is being seen in the trade relations between India and America, especially in the energy sector. India has increased the import of crude oil from America rapidly since January 2025. This import has registered a massive increase of 51 percent compared to the same period last year, which reflects the growing strategic and economic cooperation between the two countries.
A sharp increase is seen in the figures
According to a report, with the start of Donald Trump's second term, India has shown more interest in buying oil from the US. While last year India was importing 0.18 million barrels of oil per day from the US, this year this figure has increased to 0.271 million barrels per day. This boom was even more evident in the April-June 2025 quarter, when imports jumped by 114% compared to the same quarter of 2024.
From the perspective of economic data, India imported oil worth $1.73 billion from the US in the first quarter of the financial year 2024-25. At the same time, in the first quarter of the current financial year 2025-26, this figure more than doubled to $3.7 billion. In July 2025 alone, India's US oil imports were 23% higher than in June, increasing the US share in India's total crude oil imports from 3% to 8%. Government sources estimate that Indian companies can increase oil imports from the US by up to 150% in the current financial year.
Import of LNG and LPG also increased
Apart from crude oil, India has also significantly increased the import of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US. LNG imports are set to increase from $1.41 billion to $2.46 billion in 2024-25. Sources say talks on a major LNG contract worth billions of dollars between the two countries are also in an advanced stage.
On this matter, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "The strategic partnership between India and the US is very strong, which is based on shared interests and democratic values. Energy cooperation has now become an important pillar of our bilateral relations." This policy of India clearly shows that along with fulfilling its energy needs, it wants to further deepen its economic and diplomatic relations with the US.
