London (The Uttam Hindu): The court has given a strict verdict in the case of violent clashes that took place during a Kabaddi tournament in the year 2023 in the city of Derby, UK. Three persons of Indian origin, who turned the playing field into a battlefield, have been convicted and sentenced to jail. Derby Police informed that the sentence was announced by the Derby Crown Court on 19 December after Buta Singh, Damanjit Singh and Rajwinder Takhar Singh were found guilty in the trial held in November. This decision is being considered a strong message towards maintaining discipline and law and order in sports events.

The entire incident dates back to August 20, 2023, when two groups clashed during a pre-planned kabaddi match held in Derby. Video footage obtained by police officers exposed the perpetrators, showing Buta Singh aggressively pursuing members of the rival group. Police investigations revealed that the violence was not spontaneous but premeditated. Two days after the incident, when police stopped and searched Buta Singh's car, two sharp weapons were recovered from its trunk, further escalating the matter.

Evidence and footage presented to the court also showed Damanjit Singh and Rajwinder Takhar Singh brandishing large knives during the riot. All three were arrested on serious charges of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon. Given the gravity of the crimes, Derby Crown Court sentenced Buta Singh to four years in prison, Damanjit Singh to three years and four months, and Rajwinder Takhar Singh to three years and ten months.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Croom, who investigated the case, said after the verdict that what should have been a day of sports viewing and entertainment had become a day of violence and injury. He explained that both groups had gathered in advance on Brunswick Street and the fight was carried out in a planned manner. The incident had a deep and devastating impact on local residents and spectators, including families and children. Police have made it clear that such violence in public places will not be tolerated.
