Major relief on commercial LPG, quota increased from 50% to 70%; big boost for key industries
Government increases commercial LPG quota to 70%, boosting steel, auto, and textile industries and ensuring smoother industrial operations across India.
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The central government has provided major relief to industries by increasing the quota of commercial LPG from 50% to 70%. This decision aims to boost industrial activity and ensure uninterrupted operations across sectors.
The move is expected to directly benefit labour-intensive industries such as steel, automobile, and textile. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has also issued guidelines to all states regarding the implementation of this decision.
Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal has written to chief secretaries of all states and union territories, directing immediate implementation. The letter states that an additional 20% allocation has been proposed over the existing 50%, bringing the total commercial allocation of packed non-domestic LPG to 70% of pre-crisis levels.
According to the ministry, priority will be given to industries that generate large employment and support essential sectors. These include steel, automobile, textile, dye, chemical, and plastic industries. Within these, process industries that depend heavily on LPG for heating and cannot switch to natural gas will receive top priority.
Additionally, 10% of the total allocation has been reserved for states that are actively implementing PNG (Piped Natural Gas) reforms. The government has urged states to take advantage of this reform-based allocation without delay.
With this combined allocation strategy, the total commercial and industrial LPG availability will reach 70%, providing significant relief to industries and helping maintain production momentum across the country.
