No More Freezing Rooms: New Law to Ban AC Use Below 20°C and Above 28°C Across India!

Update: 2025-06-11 06:33 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): As the nation grapples with intense heatwaves, the Indian government is gearing up to roll out a new regulation regarding air conditioner (AC) usage — a step aimed at conserving energy and minimizing environmental impact.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar revealed that soon, ACs in homes, offices, and vehicles will be restricted from being set below 20°C or above 28°C.

This forthcoming rule will be applicable to residential buildings, commercial spaces, and cars, essentially creating a standard for how cool our environments can be, no matter where we are.

According to the minister, setting ACs to lower temperatures significantly boosts energy consumption, resulting in increased power usage and added strain on the environment. The new limits are intended to encourage energy efficiency and support the battle against climate change. Minister Khattar pointed out that similar measures are already in effect in several developed nations. For example, Japan restricts AC temperatures to 26°C, while Italy has set a limit of 23°C.

India’s proposed range of 20–28°C offers a more adaptable yet environmentally friendly approach to energy regulation.
