Possible curbs on mobile phones for children under 16, CM consults vice chancellors

Bengaluru (The Uttam Hindu): The Karnataka government is considering a proposal to restrict mobile phone use among students below the age of 16. The move comes amid concerns over rising social media addiction and exposure to harmful activities among children. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah discussed the issue with vice chancellors of state universities and sought their views, expressing concern over the impact of excessive mobile use on students’ education, behaviour and mental health.


Government considering strict measures

During the meeting, the Chief Minister noted that increasing dependence on social media is becoming a serious concern for young students. He said that mobile phones are also being misused, exposing children to unhealthy habits. Referring to steps taken in other countries, including restrictions on student mobile use, he stressed the need to examine similar measures to protect children.


Decision after expert feedback

The government is exploring the possibility of limiting mobile phone use by minor students, especially in educational institutions. The Chief Minister said that suggestions from vice chancellors and education experts will be important before taking any final decision. The government is expected to move ahead after reviewing their recommen

dations.
