Mumbai(The Uttam Hindu): Following the passing of veteran industrialist Ratan Tata on October 9, 2024, questions were raised regarding the ownership of certain shares not explicitly mentioned in his original will. The matter reached the Bombay High Court, which has now ruled that all listed and unlisted shares not covered in the original will shall be equally divided between the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust.

Justice Manish Pitale, who presided over the case, stated that since Ratan Tata himself established both institutions, it would be fair and appropriate for these entities to receive ownership of the unspecified shares. The bench concluded that Tata’s intent was reflected in a revised will dated December 22, 2023, in which he directed that all remaining properties and assets, including shares, be split between the two trusts.

The ruling came after a petition was filed, seeking legal clarity on the rightful ownership of Ratan Tata’s assets not covered in his earlier will. Since Ratan Tata was unmarried and had no legal heirs, the court’s decision now finalizes the distribution of his wealth. Tata, a highly respected figure in Indian industry, had a legacy of philanthropy and ethical business leadership. The judgment ensures that his legacy continues through the institutions he personally founded.
