End of an Era: Ashwin Bids Goodbye to IPL After 221 Matches, 187 Wickets
New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing an end to a remarkable chapter in his career. However, the 38-year-old clarified that he will continue playing in international T20 franchise leagues across the world.
Ashwin, who made his IPL debut in 2009, played 221 matches, claiming 187 wickets at an economy rate of 7.20. His best bowling figures were 4/34. With the bat, he scored 833 runs in 98 innings, including a highest score of 50.
Speculation around his IPL future had been circulating recently, especially after his controversial remarks regarding Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Putting an end to the rumors, Ashwin took to social media on 27 August to make his retirement official.
In his post, Ashwin wrote:
“Today marks both an ending and a new beginning for me. My IPL journey has come to a close, but my cricketing journey will continue in leagues across the world. Every end brings a new start.”
He also expressed gratitude to all IPL franchises he represented, along with the BCCI and IPL management, for giving him the platform that defined much of his career. Ashwin’s decision has left fans emotional but excited to see him shine in global leagues, marking a new phase in his illustrious cricketing journey.
