Kolkata Protest on RG Kar Doctor's Death Anniversary: Parents Injured in Police Action

Kolkata(The Uttam Hindu): On the first anniversary of the rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata's government RG Kar Hospital, tensions flared in central Kolkata. Police lathicharged protesters at the Park Street intersection as they marched towards the Bengal Secretariat, Nabanna. The protesters, part of the 'Nabanna Chalo' campaign, demanded justice for the deceased doctor and called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

1. Protesters Clash with Police: Demonstrators tried to cross barricades to move towards Vidyasagar Setu despite police warnings to stay within the designated Rani Rashmoni Road meeting venue.

2. Injuries and Sit-in: Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and over 100 protesters, including BJP leaders, were allegedly injured in the police action. Adhikari staged a sit-in at Park Street JL Nehru Road crossing.

3. Warnings and Demands: Adhikari warned that Mamata Banerjee "will have to pay a heavy price" for the police action. Protesters carried posters and banners demanding justice for the doctor and Chief Minister's resignation.

Reactions from the Deceased Doctor's Family

The victim's parents alleged that police obstructed their participation in the march despite permission from the Calcutta High Court. The father claimed police stopped people from reaching the meeting venue.
