New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): While hearing a case related to the conservation of the Aravalli Hills, the Supreme Court expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of the historic Sukhna Lake, considered a landmark of Chandigarh. The Supreme Court directly blamed illegal construction for the lake's drying up and the threat to its existence. The court's stance was so strict that it stated unequivocally that a nexus between administrative officials and the builder mafia had destroyed this natural heritage.

CJI Surya Kant strongly reprimanded

Hearing the case, a bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant took the Haryana government to task. The CJI made a scathing remark, asking, "How much longer will you allow Sukhna Lake to dry up due to the collusion between state officials and the builder mafia?" The court expressed displeasure, stating, "You have completely ruined this lake due to your vested interests and collusion." This comment highlights the severity of environmental damage caused by illegal construction and uncontrolled urbanization.

Advice on learning from past mistakes

During the hearing, the Supreme Court issued a stern warning to the Haryana government not to repeat past mistakes. The court clarified that illegal construction in the catchment areas of Sukhna Lake has caused significant damage to the lake's natural beauty. The CJI stressed that the time has come to take concrete and strict steps in this direction. The court acknowledged that if this nexus between officials and builders continues, even the remaining environment will be destroyed. This comment by the court is being considered a major blow to administrative negligence and corruption.
