Srinagar shaken: Protests turn violent, police use tear gas, internet suspended after Khamenei's death
Srinagar (The Uttam Hindu) : Tensions have risen in Jammu and Kashmir following the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Large crowd took to the streets to protest Khamenei's death resulting in voilent demonstrations in Srinagar on Monday.
Restrictions have been imposed in all districts of Kashmir as a precautionary measure and heavy security has been deployed. Despite this, people still took part in protests on Monday. However, the protests turned violent and security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Images showed security forces chasing away protesters and firing tear gas shells. Security forces also resorted to lathi charge.
Mobile and internet services have been suspended in Srinagar. According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, all examinations have been postponed, and all schools, colleges and universities in the state will remain closed for the next two days. The administration has ordered all educational institutions to close on March 3.
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha appealed to the people to maintain peace and restraint. He wrote on the social media platform, "I chaired a meeting to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. I appeal to all communities to maintain peace and restraint."
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday expressed concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East and appealed to people to maintain peace. "The Chief Minister (Omar Abdullah) has expressed deep concern over the events unfolding in Iran, including the news of the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He has appealed to all communities to maintain peace, exercise restraint and avoid any action that could lead to tension or unrest," the Chief Minister's Office posted on the social media platform X.
