SC Takes Historic Step: Reservation Policy for SC-ST Employees in Direct Recruitment and Promotions Now in Place
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a historic decision, the Supreme Court has approved a formal policy of 15 percent reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 7.5 percent reservation for Scheduled Tribes (ST) category in its direct recruitment and promotion processes. This information was given through an official circular issued to all the employees of the Supreme Court on June 24. This new reservation system has come into effect from June 23, 2025.
This important policy change will not apply to Supreme Court judges. Its scope will include various non-judicial posts such as registrar, senior personal assistant, assistant librarian, junior court assistant and chamber attendant.
Chief Justice of India (then) Gavai expressed his opinion on this decision and said that when the provision of reservation for SC and ST classes already exists in other government institutions and many High Courts of the country, then why should the Supreme Court be kept out of it? He further said that the Supreme Court has supported positive action in many of its historic decisions, and now as an institution we should implement it here too. Our actions should be in accordance with our principles.
In the circular issued regarding the new reservation policy, all the employees and registrars have been informed that the model reservation roster and register has been uploaded on the Supreme Court's internal network 'Supnet' and it has become effective from June 23. The circular also directs that if any employee finds any error or deficiency in the roster or register, they should immediately inform the concerned registrar.
The model roster details the direct recruitment policy for reserved categories for various designations, such as Senior Personal Assistant, Assistant Librarian, Junior Court Assistant, Junior Court Assistant cum Junior Programmer, Junior Court Attendant and Chamber Attendant (R). As per this policy, 15% of the posts will be reserved for SC category candidates and 7.5% for ST category candidates.
