TMC MLA announces Babri Masjid to be rebuilt in West Bengal, foundation stone to be laid on Dec 6 in Murshidabad
Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): The issue of the Babri Masjid has once again heated up West Bengal politics. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir has announced that a new Babri Masjid will be built in the state's Murshidabad district. The date chosen for the construction is December 6th, the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya. The announcement has sparked a political storm in the state, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) calling it appeasement politics.
The mosque will be completed in three years. TMC MLA from Bharatpur, Humayun Kabir, said that he had proposed the mosque last year. Speaking to ANI, he said, "We will lay the foundation stone of the Babri Masjid in Beldanga, Murshidabad district, on December 6th. The mosque will take approximately three years to complete. Various Muslim leaders will participate in the foundation stone laying ceremony."
The BJP has reacted strongly to the TMC MLA's announcement. BJP leader Agnimitra Paul questioned that anyone can build a temple or a mosque, but choosing December 6th as the date clearly reveals the TMC's intentions. She asked, "The TMC plays politics in the name of religion, but the question is, what have they done so far for the real development of minorities?"
Priyanka Tibrewal took a dig at the TMC's secularism, raising the SIR (State Identity Register) and Rohingya issues. "When they talk about restoring the Babri Masjid, who will they invite there? Are they the Rohingyas who are now fleeing to the border areas fearing the SIR? This is nothing but appeasement," she said.
TMC's 'Solidarity Rally' on December 6 Amid the announcement of mosque construction, Trinamool Congress has also intensified the preparations for holding a 'Solidarity Day' rally in Kolkata on December 6. Usually, this rally against the Babri demolition was organised by the minority cell of TMC, but this time its responsibility has been given to the youth and student wings of the party. The rally will be held near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Mayo Road in central Kolkata. According to sources, amid the tension created in the state over SIR, the leadership wants to gather a large number of people in this rally and show its strength.
