Tragic road accident claims five lives as container rams into pedestrians

A speeding container ran over six people, killing five instantly and leaving one critically injured.

Bhopal (The Uttam Hindu): A horrific road accident in Madhya Pradesh claimed five lives and left one person seriously injured after a speeding container ran over six people in Dindori district. The incident took place late at night near Kikratalaab in the Gardasari police station area on the Jabalpur Amarkantak Highway. Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and rushed the injured to hospital while anger spread among local residents.

The victims were residents of nearby villages and were returning from a function in Siliari village. Their pickup vehicle suffered a puncture around 12:30 am forcing them to stop on the roadside. While they were waiting for the tyre to be repaired a speeding container coming from Amarkantak lost control and rammed into them. The impact was extremely severe with some victims thrown several feet away. The vehicle also hit a shed an electric pole and a passenger waiting area before stopping at a distance and the driver fled from the scene.

Senior officials including the district collector and superintendent of police reached the spot after the incident. The administration announced financial assistance of 50000 rupees each for the families of the deceased. Those who lost their lives have been identified as residents of nearby villages including Rajkaran Banvasi Bihari Singh Pawan Maravi and Bisahu Dhurve while another victim was also reported dead. Grief and shock have gripped the families and the entire area. Police have registered a case and launched a search operation to arrest the absconding driver.
