Guwahati (The Uttam Hindu): The militant organization United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) has made a sensational claim that the Indian Army has attacked its camps inside the Myanmar border with drones. According to the organization, one of its senior leaders has died in this attack and about 19 other members have been injured. However, the Indian Army has clearly denied having any knowledge of any such operation.

ULFA claims: Senior leader killed in drone attack

A statement issued by ULFA (I) said that several of their mobile camps located in Myanmar's Sagaing region were attacked by drones in the early hours. The organization claimed that one of its senior leaders lost his life in this attack. It is also reported from sources that along with ULFA-I, NSCN-K hideouts were also targeted, in which many workers of that organization are also feared to be casualties.

Indian Army denied the allegations

Reacting to these claims of ULFA, Defence spokesperson Lt. Col. Mahendra Rawat categorically stated, “Indian Army has no information about any such operation.” The Army has rejected these claims, denying any action across the border.

What is ULFA?

The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is a major militant organization active in the Northeast, which was formed in 1979 by Paresh Barua and his comrades. Its main objective was to make Assam a sovereign state through armed struggle. The Government of India banned it in the year 1990 due to its separatist agenda and violent activities. There was a time when even tea traders had to leave Assam due to the terror of ULFA. In 2008, one of its prominent leaders Arabinda Rajkhowa was arrested from Bangladesh and handed over to India, after which the organization weakened, but Paresh Barua's faction (ULFA-I) is still active.
