Unnao rape case: Major setsback for Kuldeep Sengar, Supreme court refuses to hear bail plea
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear the bail plea of former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is serving life imprisonment in the Unnao rape case.
The Supreme Court asked the Delhi High Court to complete the hearing of Kuldeep Singh Sengar's case within three months. Sengar has challenged the 10-year sentence awarded by the lower court in the High Court, while the victim has demanded an enhancement of the sentence. Sengar's lawyer said that Sengar has already served 9 years and 7 months of his sentence, while the total sentence is 10 years. However, the High Court refused to grant bail. SG Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, said that Sengar is serving a life sentence in the rape case.
The judicial process in both cases involving Sengar – the Unnao rape case and the death of the victim's father in police custody – is ongoing at various levels. The CJI said that the law is followed in this country and even cases of dangerous terrorists and anti-nationals receive a fair trial. SG Tushar Mehta said that even Kasab was given full legal process. The CJI said that we will ensure that the appeal is heard fairly. On January 19, the Delhi High Court had refused bail.
Let us tell you that a petition was filed by Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Delhi High Court for bail, but the High Court rejected the bail petition. The High Court gave this decision on January 19, after which a petition was filed by Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Supreme Court, challenging the order of the Delhi High Court. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the rape case. Kuldeep Singh Sengar is also facing a rape case, in which the High Court had granted bail, but the Supreme Court stayed the decision of the Delhi High Court and cancelled the bail.
