Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Scrap Madrasa Board, Moves Towards Unified Education System
Dehradun (The Uttam Hindu): In a landmark decision, the Uttarakhand government is set to integrate minority educational institutions into the mainstream education system. Governor Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh (Retd.) has given his assent to the “Uttarakhand Minority Education Bill, 2025,” paving the way for the dissolution of the state’s Madrasa Board.
According to an official spokesperson, all existing madrasas operating in the state will now be required to obtain recognition from the Uttarakhand Minority Education Authority and affiliate themselves with the Uttarakhand Board of School Education. With this, Uttarakhand becomes the first state in India to abolish its Madrasa Board and fully merge minority institutions into the mainstream education framework.
CM Dhami Calls It a Historic Reform
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami hailed the move as a historic step towards establishing an equitable and modern education system in the state. He stated that from the academic session beginning July 2026, all minority schools will adopt the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and the New Education Policy (NEP 2020).
“The government’s aim is to ensure that every child—regardless of their community or background—receives equal education and opportunities,” Dhami emphasized. Expressing gratitude on social media, he wrote:
“Heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Governor Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh (Retd.) for approving the Uttarakhand Minority Education Bill 2025. This marks a major milestone in ensuring equality in education for all.”
What Changes Under the New Law
Under the new system, a Minority Education Authority will be established to oversee and regulate education in minority-run institutions. The body will be responsible for granting recognition, maintaining academic standards, and ensuring quality education. Once the law comes into effect, all minority institutions, including madrasas, will be mandated to obtain affiliation with the Uttarakhand School Education Board.
