Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns; Search Begins for His Successor
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post with immediate effect on Monday evening, causing a stir in national politics. He submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu, citing "priority to health care" as the reason for his sudden decision. Dhankhar's move came on the very first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, which has fueled speculation in political circles.
With his resignation, discussions have intensified regarding the next Vice President of the country. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a majority in the electoral college, which includes members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. It is believed that in the coming days, there will be intense discussions on the names of potential candidates.
According to constitutional provisions, an election has to be held “as soon as may be” when the office of vice-president falls vacant. Under Article 68(2) of the Constitution, an election shall be held as soon as may be to fill the vacancy caused by death, resignation or removal from office. The newly elected vice-president shall hold office for a full term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office.
Several names are emerging in the race for potential successors. The BJP has a large group of governors, experienced leaders of the organization and Union ministers, any one of whom can be chosen for this prestigious post. It is worth noting that Dhankhar was also the Governor of West Bengal before becoming the Vice President. His predecessor, M. Venkaiah Naidu, was also a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet and the President of the BJP before being elected Vice President in 2017.
Amidst these discussions, the name of Janata Dal (United) MP and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is also being seen as a possible candidate. He has been serving in this post since 2020 and is considered a confidant of the government. At present, all eyes are on the next move of the ruling party as to whom they choose as their candidate for this important constitutional post.
