New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Election Commission has officially released the schedule for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. According to the announcement, the last date for filing nominations is August 21, while the voting will take place on September 9. Following the vote, India will get a new Vice President. If the opposition chooses not to nominate a candidate, the Vice President could be elected unopposed. Given that the voting process is secret, the possibility of cross-voting among Members of Parliament cannot be ruled out. With the election schedule now public, political activity has started gaining momentum across party lines.

As per the schedule, the Election Commission will issue the official notification on August 7. Nominations can be submitted until August 21, and scrutiny of the same will be conducted on August 22. Candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations by August 25. Voting is scheduled for September 9, between 10 AM and 5 PM. The electoral college for this election includes 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members, and 543 members of the Lok Sabha.

It may be recalled that Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, citing health reasons. His term was originally set to end on August 10, 2027. With his resignation, the process to elect a new Vice President has now been formally initiated.
