Vice Presidential Election: EC Prepares Electoral College List, Notification to Be Issued Shortly

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu)- The Election Commission of India (ECI) has prepared the list of the electoral college for the Vice Presidential Election 2025. The Commission gave this information on Thursday. The Election Commission of India said in a press note that under Article 324 of the Constitution of India, the Election Commission has been entrusted with the responsibility of electing the Vice President. According to Article 66 (1) of the Constitution, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha as well as elected members of the Lok Sabha. According to the ECI, in compliance with Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election Rules, 1974, the Commission has prepared the list of the electoral college, which also includes the latest addresses of all the members. This list is arranged in alphabetical order on the basis of states / union territories. Apoorv Kumar Singh, Assistant Director in the Election Commission of India, said that this list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in the Election Commission of India from the date of notification. The notification is likely to be announced soon.

It is noteworthy that after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified the preparations for the election of the Vice President. Recently, the Commission had appointed the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer for the Vice Presidential election. The ECI had stated in a statement that during the last Vice Presidential election, the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha was appointed as the Returning Officer. Therefore, the Election Commission, in consultation with the Ministry of Law and Justice and with the consent of the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, has appointed the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha as the Returning Officer for the upcoming Vice Presidential Election, 2025. Apart from this, Garima Jain, Joint Secretary of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and Vijay Kumar, Director of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat have been appointed as Assistant Returning Officers during the Vice Presidential Election, 2025.
