New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu)– Holika Dahan, observed on the auspicious occasion of Falgun Purnima, holds special religious importance in Hindu tradition. The ritual symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is believed to remove negativity while bringing positive energy into life. Devotees perform Holika Dahan with prayers for happiness, peace and prosperity in their families.

In 2026, Holika Dahan will be observed on March 2, while the festival of colors will be celebrated on March 4. According to the traditional panchang, sunrise on March 2 will be at 6:16 am. Chaturdashi Tithi will continue until 5:18 pm, after which Purnima Tithi will begin. According to religious beliefs, Holika Dahan is considered most auspicious on the full moon night, especially during an appropriate muhurat despite the presence of Bhadra. This year, Bhadra will remain from the evening of March 2 until early morning on March 3, with the most favorable time for Holika Dahan falling during the late-night period.

Various items are traditionally offered into the sacred fire, each associated with specific beliefs. Cloves are offered to reduce mental stress and family tensions, while cow dung cakes are considered symbols of purity and are believed to help cleanse the environment. Turmeric knots are associated with removing obstacles in marriage and improving relationships, whereas green cardamom is believed to support wise decision-making and business growth. Sandalwood is regarded as sacred and is offered for peace and prosperity. In many regions, devotees also offer sweets and jaggery into the fire, believing that these offerings bring prosperity and help overcome financial difficulties.
