Tarn Taran(The Uttam Hindu): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu, in a statement issued here today, said that the AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is fully committed to the holistic development of Punjab’s border districts. Targeting the previous governments, he said that the people of Tarn Taran were fed only empty promises for decades, but the AAP government is changing the face of villages through work being done on the ground. Sandhu presented figures of the work done under the Swachh Bharat Mission, highlighting the government’s achievements.

Sandhu said that although Tarn Taran district became the first border district to be declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) in 2018, no concrete efforts were made by previous governments to take this progress to the next level. He said that under the first phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), around 36,000 families in the villages of the district were provided toilet facilities with the cooperation of Gram Panchayats. However, the real cleanliness drive in the villages has now been started by the AAP government.

Harmeet Singh Sandhu said that the AAP government’s intent is clear, and therefore, under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Phase-2, work is being carried out on a war footing to make villages ODF Plus (Model Category) villages. Quoting figures, he said that for the construction of Thapar Model, Seechewal Model, individual, and community soak pits under liquid waste management, a massive amount of ₹2,838.57 lakh has already been directly transferred by the government to the bank accounts of 572 Gram Panchayats and Gram Panchayat Water Supply and Sanitation Committees, ensuring that there is no shortage of funds for development works.

The AAP candidate said that these are not just announcements but visible actions on the ground. He stated that a total of 361 projects under liquid waste management have been sanctioned so far. Thanks to the swift performance of the AAP government, work on liquid waste management has already been completed in 118 villages, while work on 70 more projects is progressing rapidly and will be completed soon. Sandhu said that these figures clearly show how serious the AAP government is about providing a clean and healthy environment to the people of Tarn Taran, and that such developmental works will continue at the same pace in the future as well.
