AAP Government runs bulldozer at Congress MLA’s house; Khaira alleges demolition without notice
Kapurthala (The Uttam Hindu): A major political controversy erupted in Punjab after the AAP government carried out a demolition drive at the residence of a Congress MLA in Kapurthala. The action was taken in the presence of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), who arrived at the spot with a heavy police deployment to maintain law and order.
According to official sources, the demolition was carried out over alleged violations related to construction norms. A team of local authorities, accompanied by police personnel, reached the site early in the day and began the action using bulldozers.
The SSP of Kapurthala supervised the security arrangements as tensions rose in the area. Barricades were placed and access to the locality was restricted to prevent any untoward incident.
Reacting strongly to the development, senior Congress leader and MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira alleged that the demolition was carried out without issuing any prior notice. He termed the action politically motivated and accused the AAP government of targeting opposition leaders.
Khaira claimed that due process was not followed and that the authorities failed to provide sufficient time for compliance. He said the matter would be challenged legally and demanded a fair inquiry into the incident.
Meanwhile, officials maintained that the action was taken as per rules and in accordance with the law. They stated that any construction found in violation of regulations would face similar action, irrespective of political affiliation.
The incident has intensified the political atmosphere in the state, with both the ruling AAP and the Congress trading sharp allegations. Further developments are awaited as the issue is likely to escalate in the coming days.
