Chandigarh(The Uttam Hindu): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has given a major gift to the residents of Sri Muktsar Sahib by laying the foundation stone for sewerage and water supply projects worth ₹138.82 crore. Addressing a public gathering at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, he said that ₹90.68 crore will be spent on new sewerage systems and ₹48.14 crore on water supply works. The city has around 31,000 households, and once completed, these projects will benefit nearly 1.58 lakh people. He said that the new facilities will solve the long-standing issues of clean drinking water and sewerage in the city.

The Chief Minister said that these projects are being launched after a gap of 30 years. Despite the district producing Chief Ministers and Cabinet Ministers in the past, the city continued to be neglected. He added that he considers it a blessing to be able to initiate major development projects in this historic area. Two high-rise water tanks will be built at the Kotkapura Road Main Waterworks and the Abohar Road Waterworks.

Mann said that the existing sewerage system has outlived its lifespan, causing frequent blockages, and many newly developed areas still lack sewerage facilities. The new sewerage and water supply projects will improve conditions around Sri Darbar Sahib and other parts of the city. A provision of ₹17 crore has been made for the reconstruction of main roads and Municipal Council streets that will be dug up for these works. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure timely completion of both projects.

Earlier, the government also strengthened stubble management efforts in Sri Muktsar Sahib district. Along with the 4,800 machines already in use, another 320 modern agricultural machines have been provided to farmers on subsidy. Storage sites covering 62 acres in 40 villages have been developed to store stubble. To monitor stubble burning incidents, 27 cluster officers and 152 nodal officers have been deployed. These steps aim to create a balance between development, environment, and public safety. Reduced stubble burning leads to cleaner air and fewer road accidents, benefiting farmers and the public.

The Mann government’s initiatives, including machinery subsidies, alternative crop programs, and awareness campaigns, are helping build trust among farmers. The Chief Minister said that true development happens when policies reach the ground and benefit people directly. Under this new approach, Punjab is moving towards a cleaner, safer, and more progressive future. (Advertorial)
