Intelligence warning: ISI rebooting terror machinery to target Punjab

Jalandhar (The Uttam Hindu): Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI is attempting to reactivate its terrorist network in Punjab. Intelligence agencies say the ISI is preparing sleeper cells in the state by sending weapons, explosives and money from across the border.

The seizure of large quantities of explosives and weapons over the past month indicates a continuing conspiracy to destabilize Punjab. However, joint operations by the state police and central agencies have so far thwarted these plans. Following the Delhi bombings, surveillance has been further tightened in border districts.

Punjab police have shared details of weapons and explosives seized over the past six months with the NIA, IB and RAW. Central agencies are investigating the channels through which weapons and funds sent from Pakistan are reaching local networks.

The BSF and Punjab Police have recently seized large quantities of weapons in several operations in Amritsar, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur. In October, seven hand grenades, 7.5 kg of RDX, three IEDs, five AK-47s, and two RPGs were recovered. The RPG found in Amritsar on October 22 was capable of damaging a tank. Two AK-47s were also recovered in November. On November 2, a drone operator was arrested in Tarn Taran who was delivering weapons dropped from across the border. Preliminary investigations in these cases have confirmed cross-border links.

According to sources, the ISI is recruiting youth and mobilizing logistical support through social media, while funding is being provided through hawala and money laundering networks. Terrorists are receiving support through local criminals and drug networks. The Pakistan-backed grenade attack module arrested in Ludhiana on Thursday is also believed to be part of this conspiracy.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said the Punjab Police is acting promptly on every input and closely monitoring all suspicious activity across the border. He added that no terrorist organization will be allowed to rise and every conspiracy will be foiled.
