Jagtar Singh Tara acquitted: Court finds insufficient evidence in 16-year-old Arms Act case
Jalandhar (The Uttam Hindu) : A district court has acquitted Jagtar Singh Tara in a 2009 case registered at the Bhogpur police station. The court ruled due to a lack of evidence. Tara was charged in 2009 at the Bhogpur police station under sections 17, 18, and 20 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the Arms Act.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Rajiv Kumar delivered the verdict on Tuesday, stating that the prosecution failed to produce substantial evidence against Tara. Jagtar Singh Tara appeared in court via video conferencing from Burail Jail (Chandigarh). Advocate S.K.S. Hundal presented arguments on his behalf, stating that Tara had been falsely implicated in the case and that no substantial evidence had been provided. After considering all aspects, the court declared him innocent and acquitted him.
Jagtar Singh Tara , the main accused in the murder case of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, was also among the main accused in the 1995 assassination of the late Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bhyora were also involved in this conspiracy. The three also carried out the infamous Burail Jail break. They dug a 94-foot-long tunnel by uprooting a toilet seat in a jail barrack, through which they reached the prison wall and escaped.
