Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Aman Arora, announced on Tuesday that the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru to set up a pioneering pilot project for producing green hydrogen from biomass, particularly paddy straw.

The MoU was signed by PEDA CEO Neelima and IISc Registrar, with the formal exchange taking place between Neelima and Prof. S. Dasappa of IISc’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER) during the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Bio-Energy Research at the Sardar Swarn Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE), Kapurthala, in the presence of Union Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy and Power, Shri Pradip Naik.

Congratulating PEDA on this transformative collaboration, Arora said that the partnership reflects the state’s commitment to clean energy innovation, using agricultural residue for green hydrogen production. He added that the initiative will help create a circular economy, empowering farmers, promoting a cleaner environment, and providing carbon-free energy to industries, ultimately contributing to a strong, clean, and energy-independent Punjab.

Arora highlighted that the project will tackle stubble burning, improve air quality, generate new revenue streams for farmers, and create employment opportunities in the green energy sector, boosting the rural economy. He emphasized that this initiative will significantly advance India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission while supporting Punjab’s ambitious renewable energy targets.
