Mansa (The Uttam Hindu): A horrific road accident in Punjab's Mansa district late Friday night turned the joy of a wedding into mourning. Four people travelling in a car died on the spot in a head-on collision between a speeding car and a truck near village Sardulewala on Mansa-Sirsa road. The deceased include two women and two men. All of them were residents of Haryana's Sirsa district and were returning home from Chandigarh after attending a wedding ceremony. The driver of the car was seriously injured in the accident and has been admitted to the hospital.

Driver's nap became fatal

According to police investigations and eyewitnesses, the accident occurred late Friday night when the family was returning to Sirsa after a long journey from Chandigarh. It is suspected that the driver fell asleep due to the continuous travel, causing the car to lose control and crash into an oncoming truck. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the car was completely crushed and trapped under the truck. Upon receiving the information, Sardulgarh police and locals arrived at the scene. The car was in such a bad condition that police had to cut the body with a gas cutter to retrieve the bodies. The injured driver was first taken out and sent to the hospital because he was still breathing.

Mobile phone rings helped identify the deceased

Ganeshwar Kumar, SHO of Sardulgarh police station, said that immediately after the accident, it was difficult to identify the deceased. Meanwhile, a mobile phone lying inside the damaged car rang. When police answered the call, the person on the other end said the family was from Sirsa. Although the caller didn't provide detailed information, it was through this phone call that police were able to reach the relatives of the deceased.

The truck driver fled the scene and the police launched an investigation

The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police have seized the truck and launched a search for the absconding driver. The police have deposited all four bodies in the Civil Hospital mortuary for post-mortems. The SHO stated that the family had gone to Chandigarh to attend a wedding and were returning directly from there. Exhaustion and sleepiness are believed to be the primary causes of this tragic accident. Police are currently investigating the matter thoroughly and have initiated the process of filing a case against the truck driver.
