Punjab Faces Relentless Heatwave: IMD Issues Warm Night Alert Across Multiple Districts

Update: 2025-05-22 06:23 GMT

Chandigarh(The Uttam Hindu): The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm across Punjab, issuing consecutive warm night alerts amid an ongoing spell of extreme heat. Residents are being warned of uncomfortably high nighttime temperatures that offer little to no respite from the searing daytime heat.

Over the past several days, the state has experienced sharp weather fluctuations. However, temperatures have remained consistently elevated, prompting the IMD to escalate its warnings.

A heatwave red alert has been declared in key districts including Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, and Mansa, all of which are also under a warm night orange alert. This double warning signifies dangerously high day and night temperatures—conditions that can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

In addition, a warm night yellow alert has been issued for Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Malerkotla. According to the IMD, these alerts will remain in effect for these districts tomorrow, May 23, as well.
