Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Punjab government has decided to increase the property tax on residential and commercial properties in the state by 5 percent. A notification has been issued by the government in this regard. The new tax rates have come into effect from April 1, 2025.

Government officials informed that this decision has been taken in view of the decline in the revenue of urban bodies such as Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council. As per the new rates, now 5 percent more tax will have to be paid on both residential and commercial properties as compared to the existing tax.

A government spokesperson said that this increase has been made with the aim of developing the urban infrastructure of the state and improving the quality of services. However, he also clarified that the property tax rates in Punjab are still much lower than other states of the country.
