Shami's wife Seeks ₹10 lakh monthly maintenance: "₹4 lakh monthly alimony not enough?", questions Supreme Court
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court has issued notices to the West Bengal government and cricketer Mohammed Shami on a petition seeking an increase in alimony from his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. The court has sought a response within four weeks. The next hearing will be held after four weeks.
The Calcutta High Court had ordered a monthly alimony payment of 1.5 lakh rupees to Hasin Jahan and 2.5 lakh rupees for her daughter. After this, Hasin Jahan challenged the Calcutta High Court's decision in the Supreme Court, seeking an increase in the alimony she was receiving from cricketer Shami. During the hearing, the Supreme Court remarked that the alimony awarded by the High Court appears to be reasonable.
The petition has sought alimony of Rs 10 lakh and directed the respondent husband to pay interim maintenance of Rs 7,00,000 lakh per month to the petitioner wife and Rs 3,00,000 lakh per month to the minor daughter.
Mohammed Shami married Hasin Jahan in 2014. Four years later, in 2018, Hasin Jahan filed a domestic violence case against Shami, leading to their separation. Following this, in an Instagram post, Hasin Jahan called Shami "characterless, greedy, and selfish." During a show, Mohammed Shami spoke about his personal life, saying that no one wants conflict in their home, especially when serving their country. Shami clearly stated that the allegations leveled against him over the years far exceed those leveled against some criminals.
Mohammed Shami hasn't played for the Indian team since March 2025. He last played an international match on March 9th against New Zealand. Currently, Shami is proving himself in domestic competitions. He took seven wickets against Uttarakhand in the Ranji Trophy and eight wickets against Gujarat. Fans are eagerly awaiting his return to international cricket.
