ICC steps in after BCCI complaint over Asia Cup trophy taken back from Mohsin Naqvi
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken up the ongoing dispute over the Asia Cup 2025 trophy with the International Cricket Council (ICC). During the ICC board meeting in Dubai on Friday, where important topics like the expansion of the Women's World Cup and the Olympics were discussed, this unresolved issue also attracted attention. India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, defeated Salman Agha's Pakistan team by five wickets in the final of the Asia Cup 2025 played in Dubai on September 28 to win its ninth Asia Cup title.
However, during the trophy distribution ceremony after the match, the Indian team refused to receive the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi. Naqvi then took the trophy with him and the matter has been pending since then. According to sources, the BCCI formally raised the issue in the ICC meeting. The ICC Board members agreed that both India and Pakistan are important for world cricket and that the dispute should be resolved peacefully. The ICC has formed a special committee to resolve the dispute, which will soon work to find a solution so that the Asia Cup trophy can be presented to India with dignity. However, the issue was not included in the official agenda of the meeting, so no official minutes were recorded.
10 teams to play in the 2029 World Cup
A major decision was also taken in the meeting regarding women's cricket. The 2029 Women's One-Day World Cup will now have 10 teams, up from the current eight. The decision comes after the success of the historic Women's World Cup in India, where nearly 300,000 spectators watched the matches in stadiums and a record 500 million viewers watched on television.
