Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu) : Indian captain Shubman Gill will travel with the team to Guwahati on Wednesday for the second Test between India and South Africa, which begins on Saturday. However, Gill's participation in the series-deciding match has not yet been confirmed.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wrote on the social media platform 'X', "Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on the second day of the Kolkata Test against South Africa. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation after the day's play, kept under observation, and discharged the next day. Shubman is responding well to the treatment he received. He will travel with the team to Guwahati on November 19th. The BCCI medical team will continue to monitor him, and a decision on his participation in the second Test will be made accordingly."

Gill was injured while batting on the second day of the first Test match played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After hitting a four off South African off-spinner Simon Harmer in the 35th over of the Indian innings, Gill experienced neck discomfort and had to retire hurt. The Indian captain was unable to bat again in the match. Gill was taken to the hospital after the second day's play, where he was fitted with a cervical collar.

Before the start of the third day, the BCCI announced that captain Gill was ruled out of the remainder of the match. India lost this thrilling encounter by 30 runs. With this, South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Now, Team India must win the Guwahati Test to level the series.

Previously, in October 2024, Gill struggled with neck stiffness. He suffered this problem before the Test against New Zealand, which ruled him out of the match. The same problem also prevented Gill from playing in the second T20I against Sri Lanka in July 2024.
