India to Host Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad: A Historic Milestone for Indian Sports
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a landmark achievement for Indian sports, Ahmedabad has been recommended as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the centenary edition of the prestigious global sporting event. The Commonwealth Games Executive Board officially confirmed the decision on Wednesday, sparking celebrations across the country.
ICC President Jay Shah congratulated India on this historic selection, calling it a “significant moment for Indian sports” and a reflection of the country’s growing global influence. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Shah wrote, “Heartiest congratulations to India on being approved by the Commonwealth Association to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. This is a monumental opportunity for Indian sports and a testament to our rising stature on the world stage.”
The selection of Ahmedabad followed a comprehensive evaluation process under the supervision of the Commonwealth Games Assessment Committee. The panel assessed candidate cities based on multiple parameters including technical readiness, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance, and alignment with Commonwealth sporting values.
Both India (Ahmedabad) and Nigeria (Abuja) presented compelling bids that showcased innovation and the ambition to strengthen the Commonwealth Games movement. Ultimately, Ahmedabad emerged as the top choice, symbolizing India’s expanding capabilities in hosting large-scale international sporting events.
The 2030 Games will hold special significance as it will mark 100 years since the first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The centenary edition is expected to be celebrated with grandeur, reflecting the evolution of sports and unity across member nations.
Reacting to the development, P.T. Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association and Commonwealth Games Association of India, expressed pride and optimism:
“Hosting the Centenary Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad would be an extraordinary honor for India. These Games will not only showcase India’s world-class sporting and organizational abilities but will also play a vital role in our journey towards ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’. We see the 2030 Games as an opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future within the Commonwealth.”
India has a strong track record in the Commonwealth Games, consistently ranking among the top performing nations. In the 2022 Birmingham Games, India secured fourth place, reaffirming its growing excellence in multiple sports disciplines.
With this decision, India joins the elite league of global sporting hosts once again and Ahmedabad is set to become the center of world attention in 2030, when thousands of athletes from across the Commonwealth will gather to compete, celebrate, and make history.
