IPL ban lifts in Bangladesh: New govt prioritises cricket diplomacy with India
Bangladesh lifts IPL broadcast ban after government change, citing separation of sports and politics. Move seen as diplomatic signal ahead of India cricket tour
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The bitterness in cricketing relations between India and Bangladesh appears to be coming to an end after fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The former Bangladesh government, led by Mohammad Yunus, not only refused to send its team to India for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, but also completely banned the broadcast of the IPL in the country. This ban on the world's biggest and most popular T20 league shocked cricket fans. However, after the change of power in Bangladesh, the situation has completely changed and the new government has once again given the green signal to the broadcast of the IPL.
New government's emphasis on keeping sports and politics separate
Bangladesh's current Information and Broadcasting Minister, Zahir Uddin Swapan, has clarified the situation regarding this entire controversy, stating that the new government wants to keep sports completely separate from politics. He clarified that there will be no government or administrative restrictions on the broadcast of the Indian Premier League. According to Zahir Uddin Swapan, if any TV channel wishes to show IPL matches from a commercial perspective, the government will view it positively and no channel will be prevented from broadcasting it. The Cable Operators Association has also confirmed that if Star Sports shows the IPL in Bangladesh, they can broadcast it without any fear and have not received any instructions to stop it.
There is a 'diplomatic' connection linked to Team India's upcoming tour
The Bangladesh government's sudden softening of its stance on the IPL is being seen as a major diplomatic signal. Bangladesh is scheduled to play a crucial series of three ODIs and three T20Is against India at home in September this year. However, the final decision regarding the Indian team's tour rests with the approval of the Indian central government. It is believed that the new government is making a significant effort to improve its cricketing and diplomatic relations with India by lifting the ban imposed by the previous government due to the political climate and disputes between the boards.
