New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken a significant and sensitive decision regarding the Indian Premier League 2026. The tournament's opening ceremony will not be held this year. This decision was taken in memory of those who lost their lives in last year's tragic accident in Bengaluru .

In fact, on June 4, 2025, 11 people died in a stampede during the Royal Challengers Bangalore 's victory celebrations. This incident shocked the entire nation. Now, out of respect for that tragedy, the Board has decided to start IPL 2026 with a low-key approach.

The first match will be held in Bengaluru

IPL 2026 will begin on March 28th. The Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the tournament's opening match , which will be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This is also why the postponement of the opening ceremony was deemed appropriate, so that the event can be held in a completely safe and controlled environment.

According to reports, the closing ceremony could be held before the IPL 2026 final (May 31). A final decision on this will be taken soon.

The opening ceremony has been postponed before

This isn't the first time the IPL opening ceremony has been cancelled. Previously, during IPL 2019 , the ceremony was not held to honor the 40 CRPF soldiers martyred in the Pulwama terrorist attack . The money that would have been spent on the ceremony was donated to the families of the martyrs.

The opening ceremony of last season IPL 2025 was held in Kolkata , in which artists like Shahrukh Khan , Shreya Ghoshal , Disha Patani and Karan Aujla performed.

This time IPL 2026 may start without a grand ceremony, but this decision is being seen as an example of sensitivity and responsibility.
