Chennai (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab Kings have been penalised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India despite registering two consecutive wins in Indian Premier League 2026. The action comes due to repeated slow over-rate violations, resulting in heavy fines on captain Shreyas Iyer and the entire team.

Punjab Kings, who reached the final last season, started their campaign strongly by defeating Gujarat Titans and then thrashing Chennai Super Kings at their home ground. However, their celebrations were dampened by disciplinary action.

Shreyas Iyer fined ₹36 lakh in two matches

In the match played on April 3 in Chennai, Punjab successfully chased a massive target of 210 runs within 19 overs. But during their bowling innings, the team failed to complete overs on time.

As per the official release, Iyer has been fined ₹24 lakh for this second offence of slow over-rate. Earlier, he was fined ₹12 lakh in the match against Gujarat Titans. In total, the captain has faced a penalty of ₹36 lakh in just two matches of IPL 2026.

Other players including Priyansh Arya also fined

According to IPL rules, the first slow over-rate offence results in a fine only for the captain. However, if the offence is repeated, the penalty extends to the playing XI and the impact player as well.

As a result, apart from Iyer, all other players—including Player of the Match Priyansh Arya—have been fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee (whichever is lower).

This strict action highlights that along with winning matches, maintaining over-rate discipline is equally important for teams in the tournament.
