Shubman Gill appointed new ODI captain of Indian cricket team, replaces Rohit Sharma
Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Test captain Shubman Gill has been appointed as India's new ODI captain. He replaces Rohit Sharma for the Australia tour. Rohit and Virat Kohli are members of this ODI team. India announced the 15-member ODI squad for the Australia tour on Saturday. Gill will lead the team in the three-match series starting in Australia from October 19. Rohit has been selected as a batsman in the team and is set to represent India again for the first time since the Champions Trophy in March along with Virat Kohli. The 26-year-old Gill will now play a leadership role in all three formats, being the Test and ODI captain, as well as the vice-captain of the T20 team.
The 38-year-old Rohit has been India's full-time ODI captain since December 2021. Overall, he has led India in 56 ODIs, winning 42, losing 12, with one tie and one draw. He led India to the 2018 Asia Cup title as stand-in captain and then to the 2023 Asia Cup title as full-time captain. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. His tenure culminated in India winning the 2025 Champions Trophy in March. Both Rohit and Kohli have retired from Test and T20 Internationals, so the upcoming ODI series in Australia will be their first international appearances in more than seven months. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has also not been included in the squad for the Australia tour.
The squad is as follows: Shubman Gill (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Dhruv Jurel.
