WhatsApp to stop working without SIM card as new government rule comes into effect
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – If you use WhatsApp, this news is important for you. The central government has made it clear that there will be no relaxation of the SIM-binding rule. This provision will also apply to messaging platforms like Telegram and Signal. This rule will be fully effective from March 1, 2026, and all companies will be required to comply.
What is the SIM-Binding rule?
Simply put, the same SIM card must remain active in your phone with the mobile number you used to create your messaging account. If that SIM is removed from the phone or becomes inactive, the services of the associated app may be affected. Until now, the system was such that after verification via a 6-digit OTP, the app did not continuously check for the presence of the SIM. But under the new rule, it will be ensured that the account remains linked to an active and valid SIM at all times.
Why is the government imposing stricter restrictions?
The government argues that this step is necessary to curb digital fraud, misuse of fake numbers, and cybercrimes. If every account is linked to a verified and active SIM, it will be easier to identify fake accounts and scams.
No relief after March 1, 2026
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had issued this rule on November 28, 2025 and companies have been given 90 days to implement it. This means that by March 1, 2026, all messaging platforms will have to implement the SIM-Binding system. Along with this, the new provision will also be applicable for web and desktop login. Now, if you use WhatsApp on computer or web, then auto-logout can happen every six hours and you will have to login again by scanning the QR code.
What will be the impact on average users?
If your mobile number is active and the same SIM is in your phone, you won't face any problems.
If you remove the SIM or insert it into another phone, the app may temporarily stop working.
If the number is disabled due to a failed recharge, re-verification may be required.
The government believes this step will make the digital ecosystem more secure and strengthen the fight against cybercrime. It remains to be seen how quickly and effectively companies implement this system before March 1st.
