Two Months On: British Families Still Await DNA Reports After Air India Crash, Agony Deepens Over Body Mix-Up
London (Uttam Hindu News): Nearly two months after the Air India-171 plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad to London, grieving British families are still waiting for DNA reports to confirm the remains of their loved ones. After reports of swapping and mislabeling of remains, high-level talks between the Indian and UK governments are now expected to speed up the process.
According to the law firm 'Keystone Law' representing the victim families, two of the 12 coffins sent from India to Britain after the tragic incident on June 12 were wrongly labelled, leading to misidentification. The issue was discussed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Britain last week after it was highlighted in the international media.
James Healy-Pratt, aviation partner at Keystone Law, said, "There has been high-level discussions on this matter. It is believed that some matching DNA remains have now been found in India. We are awaiting official confirmation of this."
It is worth noting that 241 passengers and crew members died in this plane crash, including 52 British citizens. After the case of mistaken identity of the bodies came to light, the Indian Foreign Ministry had reacted last month and said that the remains of all the bodies were handled in a very professional manner and with full care of the dignity of the deceased. The ministry had also assured that they are working closely with the British authorities to address any concerns related to this issue.
