New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – A preliminary investigation report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has revealed shocking details about the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash. According to the report, both fuel control switches of the engines moved from the ‘Run’ position to ‘Cutoff’ just three seconds after takeoff, causing both engines to shut down mid-air.

The incident occurred with Air India Flight 171, just 34 seconds after takeoff. The cockpit voice recorder captured a disturbing exchange between the two pilots — one asks, “Why did you cut the fuel?” to which the other replies, “I didn’t.”

According to the report, the engines attempted a restart as the EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) values spiked, indicating re-light attempts. However, the confusion in the cockpit suggests a misunderstanding or possible mechanical malfunction with the fuel switch locking mechanism.

At the controls was First Officer Clive Kundar, with Captain Sumeet Sabharwal monitoring. Sabharwal had over 8,600 flight hours on the B787, and Kundar had clocked over 1,100 hours. Both were well-rested before the flight.

The 15-page report also referenced a 2018 FAA bulletin that warned of potential disconnection in the locking feature of the fuel control switches, though Air India did not act on it as it was “advisory” and not mandatory.

Despite the terrifying incident, there was no fault found with the aircraft's airworthiness, engine manufacturer GE's GEnx-1B, or weather conditions. Takeoff weight was within limits. Air India, in a statement on X, said: “We mourn this tragic loss and are committed to providing full support to affected families. Air India is cooperating with regulators and stakeholders during the investigation.”
