New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a major step towards strengthening India’s combat capabilities, the much-awaited Apache AH-64E attack helicopters are set to arrive from the United States this week. As part of the first batch, three of these advanced ‘flying tanks’ will land at Hindon Air Force Station in Ghaziabad before being formally inducted into the Indian Army fleet. Known for their deadly precision strikes even in pitch-dark conditions, these helicopters are expected to be deployed along the western border with Pakistan.

The Indian Army has already completed preparations for their induction, with a dedicated Apache squadron established in Jodhpur nearly 15 months ago. However, shifting geopolitical dynamics and logistical delays pushed the delivery timeline. These helicopters are part of a six-unit deal signed with the US in 2020, originally scheduled for delivery by mid-2024.

While the Indian Air Force already operates two Apache squadrons at Pathankot and Jorhat following the 2015 deal for 22 helicopters, this is the first time the Indian Army is acquiring Apaches specifically for its operational needs.

The Apache AH-64E’s cutting-edge features include advanced night-vision navigation systems, all-weather operational capabilities, and the ability to destroy enemy targets with unmatched accuracy. Apart from offensive operations, they can also be effectively used for defensive and peacekeeping missions. Interestingly, a part of the Apache’s airframe is manufactured in India at a joint Boeing-Tata facility in Hyderabad, which delivered one Apache airframe to the Army last year.
