"India Spreading Lies About Hindu Attacks in Bangladesh": Shocking Claim by Muhammad Yunus
Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): Bangladesh's chief advisor Muhammad Yunus has accused India of deliberately spreading false information about alleged attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh. In an interview with American journalist Mehdi Hasan, Yunus said, “India is currently very active in spreading fake news. There is a flood of misinformation everywhere.” Yunus claimed that reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh are baseless and exaggerated. “There is no organized violence happening. What the media portrays as religious violence are, in fact, minor local disputes over land or personal issues,” he said.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, several international reports had surfaced alleging increased violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. However, Yunus rejected these reports outright and accused India of using the issue to create pressure on Dhaka. Recently, former U.S. President Donald Trump described Bangladesh’s treatment of minorities as "barbaric," to which Yunus responded, questioning Trump's awareness of the ground reality in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, protests have erupted in Dhaka with over 30,000 demonstrators demanding justice and protection for Hindus. The protestors also called for the release of Hindu spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and the withdrawal of sedition charges against Hindu leaders. Yunus appealed to the Hindu community to not see themselves only through a religious lens, but as proud citizens of Bangladesh. He emphasized that asserting citizenship rights rather than religious identity would ensure greater protection.
