New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the verge of a major leadership change. Reports suggest that the current president, Roger Binny, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, may soon step down from his post. The reason is the constitutional age cap of 70 years, which makes him ineligible to continue.

In the interim, Rajeev Shukla, the BCCI Vice President since 2020, has already taken charge as the Acting President. He is expected to lead the board until fresh elections are conducted or a new president is chosen.

According to BCCI rules, no office-bearer can continue after turning 70. With Binny now crossing that threshold, the transition was inevitable. Interestingly, under Shukla’s acting leadership, a meeting of BCCI officials was already held on August 27, where discussions on a new team sponsor—after Dream11’s exit—were taken up. This indicates that the process of leadership change is already underway.

Roger Binny had taken over as BCCI’s 36th President in 2022, succeeding former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. He became only the third former cricketer to head the BCCI. Meanwhile, despite the pending National Sports Governance Law, BCCI is set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections in September under the existing Lodha Committee-recommended constitution, as confirmed by the Sports Ministry.
