Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab Police have arrested the driver involved in the hit-and-run incident that injured 114-year-old legendary athlete Fauja Singh in Jalandhar. Late Tuesday night, the police nabbed 30-year-old NRI Amritpal Singh Dhillon and also recovered the Fortuner SUV (PB 20 C 7100) used in the accident.

According to police sources, Amritpal Singh was brought to the station for interrogation, during which he confessed to the crime. The accused revealed that he was returning from Mukerian after selling mobile phones when the accident occurred near Byas village, where an elderly man came under his car. He claimed he had no idea the victim was Fauja Singh.

Amritpal Singh Dhillon is a resident of Dasupur village in Kartarpur, Jalandhar. After the accident, instead of going back to Jalandhar, he drove through several villages and headed straight to Kartarpur. Police traced and arrested him from his Kartarpur residence.

Investigations revealed that the SUV was registered in the name of Varinder Singh from Athouli village in Kapurthala. Varinder told police he had recently sold the vehicle to Amritpal Singh, who had returned from Canada just eight days ago. The accused will now be presented in court for police remand to facilitate further investigation. With the arrest and vehicle recovery, Punjab Police have termed it a major breakthrough in the high-profile case.
