Haryana's ADGP Y Puran Kumar shoots himself at residence in Chandigarh

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu) - Senior Haryana Police IPS officer and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by shooting himself at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh.

His wife, Amneet P. Kumar, was not at home at the time of the incident. She is a Haryana cadre IAS officer and is currently on a visit to Japan with the state's Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini. She currently serves as Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Foreign Cooperation.

According to reports, police received information around noon on Tuesday that Y. Puran Kumar had committed suicide in his government residence in Sector 11. A police team arrived at the scene, sealed off the house, and forensic experts were called in for an investigation. Initial investigations revealed that the officer shot himself with his licensed weapon. Police have taken the body into custody and sent it for a post-mortem examination. Police officials say the cause of the incident is still unknown. The investigation is being conducted with all aspects in mind.

Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur said that the Sector 11 police station received a report of a suicide at around 1:30 pm. When police arrived at the scene, the body of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar was found at his home. A CFSL team is investigating the incident. More information will be available after the post-mortem. Y. Puran Kumar was a senior IPS officer of the Haryana cadre and was currently posted at the Police Training College. During his long career, he held several important positions in the state police.
