Hyderabad (The Uttam Hindu): A tragic incident marred the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in Hyderabad late Sunday night after a chariot procession turned deadly. At least five people lost their lives and four others sustained injuries when the wooden chariot came in contact with a high-tension electric wire in Gokulnagar, Ramanathapur.

The deceased were identified as Krishna (21), Rudra Vikas (39), Rajendra Reddy (45), Srikanth Reddy (35), and Suresh Yadav (34). The accident occurred when the vehicle carrying the chariot broke down and nine people attempted to carry it manually. The chariot touched a live overhead wire, electrocuting the devotees instantly, leading to chaos and panic among the crowd.

Among the injured was Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy’s gunman Srinivas, along with three others. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. Police immediately launched rescue operations at the spot and confirmed that the tragedy struck near Yadav Function Hall.

Leaders from across political parties expressed grief over the incident and demanded financial compensation for the victims’ families as well as the best medical treatment for the injured.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Kukatpally, two groups clashed during Krishna Janmashtami celebrations, leaving one person injured. Police suspect old rivalry as the cause of the clash and have registered a case for further investigation.
