Indus Water Treaty Suspended, Attari Border Closed’… Jaishankar Roars in Parliament, Lists 5 Major Decisions
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): During a discussion in the Lok Sabha on ‘Operation Sindoor’, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar elaborated on India’s strong response following the Pahalgam terror attack. He stated that under the country's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, India exposed Pakistan globally and took firm diplomatic and economic steps to send a strong and clear message across the border.
Jaishankar emphasized the need for a clear and resolute message after the attack, warning of serious consequences. He informed the House that a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) was held on April 23, where five historic and strict decisions were taken.
These included the suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty until Pakistan stops cross-border terrorism, immediate closure of the Attari Check Post, withdrawal of SAARC visa exemption for Pakistani nationals, expulsion of Pakistan’s defense, naval, and air advisors from its High Commission, and a reduction of staff in the Pakistani High Commission from 55 to 30.
The Minister added that India’s response extended beyond these actions, focusing on exposing Pakistan’s role in sponsoring cross-border terrorism at the international level. He said the attack was aimed at targeting Jammu & Kashmir’s economy and inciting communal tensions in India, a narrative accepted even by the United Nations Security Council.
Jaishankar also revealed that on May 9, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance called Prime Minister Narendra Modi warning about a potential large-scale Pakistani attack. In response, PM Modi firmly stated that India would give a fitting reply to Pakistan.Refuting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s earlier claims of mediating between India and Pakistan, Jaishankar clarified that no mediator was ever involved between the two nations.
