India Braces for 20% US Tariff Amid Silent Trade Talks with Trump Administration
New Delhi/Washington(The Uttam Hindu): The United States is reportedly considering imposing a 20% tariff on Indian goods as part of an interim trade agreement. While no official tariff notice has been issued yet, sources suggest that a deal between New Delhi and Washington is nearly finalized. This move would place India in a better position compared to other Asian nations like Vietnam and the Philippines, which are facing similar or higher tariffs.
The proposed agreement could serve as a temporary solution, helping both countries resolve key trade concerns ahead of a more comprehensive deal. However, two major sticking points remain: India’s refusal to open its market to genetically modified crops, and regulatory barriers in agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
While President Trump has already announced tariff hikes on over 20 nations, India has so far avoided formal action. Talks are ongoing, with an Indian delegation expected to visit Washington soon to push negotiations forward.
