Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Vacates Official Residence, Moves to INLD Leader Abhay Chautala's Home
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Nearly a month after stepping down from the post of Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar was seen in public for the first time on Monday, signaling the beginning of a formal transition from his constitutional role. According to reports, he is expected to vacate the official Vice President residence by Monday evening.
As of now, Dhankhar has not been allotted a new government accommodation, and he is set to temporarily shift into the South Delhi residence of INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala, located in Chattarpur Enclave. Chautala confirmed this arrangement, stating that he offered the residence voluntarily due to longstanding family ties. “He didn’t ask for the house. I offered it to him as we share an old family relationship,” Chautala said.
Sources close to Dhankhar revealed that much of his personal belongings have already been moved to the Chattarpur home. Earlier in the day, Dhankhar was spotted visiting a dental clinic at the Army Hospital in Dhaula Kuan, marking his first public outing since his resignation.
A close aide mentioned: “He had remained indoors for the past month, meeting only family and close friends. Today was the first time he stepped out, for a doctor’s appointment.”
Political Developments After Resignation
Dhankhar had resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, citing health concerns. However, there was widespread speculation that his resignation might also be linked to a controversial decision involving the acceptance of an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, which reportedly led to political backlash.
Following his resignation, the Election Commission of India announced fresh elections for the Vice President's post, scheduled for September 9.
The ruling NDA alliance has fielded Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate, while the opposition INDIA bloc has nominated former Supreme Court judge Sudarshan Reddy.
