Mumbai Paralyzed by Torrential Rains: BMC Shuts Down Offices, 8 Dead in Maharashtra Floods, High Alert issued
Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Amid relentless heavy rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the closure of all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai city and suburbs. Employees have been advised to work from home due to the dangerous weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “Red Alert” for Mumbai and surrounding areas, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. A BMC statement said, “Currently, Mumbai is experiencing continuous downpour. Considering the severity, acting as the District Disaster Management Authority, BMC has declared a holiday on Tuesday for all government, semi-government, and BMC offices, except for essential services.”
The BMC also urged private offices and establishments to provide work-from-home options to employees and restrict unnecessary travel.
Similarly, the Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner appealed to residents to step out only if necessary. In a social media post on ‘X’, he wrote: “Good morning Mumbai! Since heavy rainfall is expected today, please follow safety guidelines. Avoid venturing out unless essential, stay away from beaches during high tide, and remember that we are here to help in any emergency. Private companies should allow maximum employees to work from home. Stay safe, take care.”
Meanwhile, Maharashtra has already reported at least 8 deaths due to heavy rains and flooding. With the IMD predicting intense rain until 21st August, Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts remain under severe weather warnings.
